Fickle Taste Of Romance

For the past two years, Jeff Nimoy has followed the so-called “Caveman Diet,” eating only foods that might have been available to hunter-gatherers 10,000 years ago. But how will he find a cave woman?

“If I ever want to get married, which I do, I have to be able to find someone else on this diet,” he said.

Nimoy soon realized that he was not the only person who had trouble meeting someone with shared taste. The issue crops up for people who have gone gluten free, vegan or kosher. So in June, Nimoy launched SamePlate.com, an online dating service that matches people for free based on dietary restrictions and favorite foods.

Nimoy, a distant cousin of “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy, and a writer, director and producer, launched SamePlate out of his Studio City home while he was between entertainment projects. He self-funded the website, which to date has cost him just less than $2,500 to develop and promote. He expects to eventually bring in money through food-focused advertising.

Nimoy first worked to drive membership among his 1,000 Facebook friends and 10,000-person blog readership, but initial numbers weren’t encouraging.

“I thought that between these 11,000 people, I should get a pretty good response. But after all that, I only got nine sign-ups on the first day,” he said. “I was definitely discouraged.”

But since, Nimoy said membership has increased steadily. He has been attending events to meet potential angel investors to fund the dating site, but he has yet to get any official bites. He remains optimistic.

“It’s like in show business, when you have a great idea, and you just go do it and put it out there,” he said. “If it really is good, people find you.”
