Just In Time For Doomsday

Everybody knows West Hollywood loves to throw a party – and what better occasion than the end of the world?

Dec. 21 supposedly marks the end of the ancient Mayan calendar, and some say that’s a sign of the apocalypse. In festive West Hollywood, that’s just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Several bars and restaurants have special blowout parties planned.

“We’re planning an evening of apocalyptic costuming and zombie dancers,” said Alfredo Diaz, managing partner of the Revolver Video Bar on Santa Monica Boulevard. “There may be all this speculation about it being doomsday and all that. But for me, it’s just an excuse to throw another party.”

Abbey Food & Bar will feature Mayan décor and dancers decked out in ancient Mayan costumes, spokesman Brian Rosman said.

“If you ask most people in West Hollywood where they would want to spend their last night on earth, they would say the Abbey,” he said.

Last month, the city announced that local bars and restaurants would partner to celebrate the occasion and at least one side street would be closed to facilitate the partying.

“West Hollywood is always there for a cheeky moment and a reason to celebrate,” said Councilman John Duran.

Ian Owens, a spokesman for Duran, said there’s a solid underlying economic reason to play up the end of the world.

“Traditionally, the weekend before Christmas is kind of quiet in West Hollywood,” Owens said. “This is an effort to liven things up and provide some economic assistance for the bars and restaurants.”
