LAX Gets Sandwiched

When Cole’s Pacific Electric Buffet opened in 1908, its customers were mostly commuters moving through downtown Los Angeles on Pacific Electric streetcars.

Now, 104 years later, the venerable eatery famous for its French dip sandwiches is finally opening a second location. It’s been so long that this time it’s catering to travelers about to hop on cross-country jets.

Cole’s will open in Terminal 4 of Los Angeles International Airport later this year, part of an influx of homegrown L.A. restaurants coming to LAX terminals.

“People want LAX to represent the city of Los Angeles rather than national chains. Cole’s is Los Angeles,” said Cedd Moses, proprietor of 213 Spirited Ventures LLC, which now owns the eatery.

Cole’s has never moved from its original location in the Pacific Electric building at Sixth and Main streets, and Moses said he aims to bring some of the restaurant’s old-school style to the airport location. That will include using round penny-size tile and other early 20th century touches.

The airport Cole’s will serve the same lunch and dinner menus as the original and have a full bar. Unlike the original, the LAX outpost will also have a breakfast menu, featuring special items such as the “eggs benedip,” a ham and egg sandwich on French bread, served with a cup of hollandaise sauce for dipping.
