He Did It ‘My Way’

Robert Davi has channeled a ghost of Christmas past who goes by the title “Chairman of the Board.”

Better known as a film and TV actor, Davi recorded an album earlier this year based on the songs of Frank Sinatra. Three music companies made offers to distribute “Davi Sings Sinatra on the Road to Romance,” but Davi didn’t think the financials were high enough. So he got the backing of a few local investors and launched his own label, Sun Lion Records, in West Hollywood and the company released the album.

His next project came about four weeks ago, when Davi decided he wanted to record a single of “Mistletoe and Holly,” one of the few Christmas jingles that Sinatra wrote. After recording the song, Davi arranged to distribute it online and give the profits to the Salvation Army.

“As CEO of my own label, I can move fast,” he said. “Some local radio stations have agreed to play it, including KRTH-FM (101.1) and KTWV-FM (94.7).”

Davi first came to Hollywood in 1977 when Sinatra selected him to act in the film “Cherry Street.” That jump-started his career.

In the new year, Sun Lion plans to expand its repertoire beyond Sinatra to other music from the same period performed by a younger generation of vocalists. Eventually, Davi hopes to produce newly written songs with the kind of bubbly optimism made popular by Ol’ Blue Eyes.

“Sun Lion’s second album doesn’t have a name yet,” he said. “But the third one will be titled ‘Davi Sings Davi.’ ”
