Platinum Equity Buys Denver Software Developer

Platinum Equity on Tuesday said that it acquired Quark Inc., a Denver developer of widely used page-layout software for print and other publications.

The Beverly Hills private equity firm controlled by billionaire Tom Gores said it plans not only to expand the breadth and depth Quark’s product line but also use the company as a vehicle to acquire compatible companies. In addition to print publications, Quark’s software can publish data in XML for web browsers, as well as in formats for e-readers, tablets and mobile devices.

The firm was once the dominant desktop publishing platform but in recent years has seen its market share chipped away by firms such as Adobe Systems Inc.

“Quark is a legendary brand that helped create the desktop-publishing market and is now helping organizations transform how they publish content both to print and digital media,” said Brian Wall, the Platinum partner in charge of the deal, in a statement. “We believe that with their expertise and innovative software, Quark has the potential to revolutionize publishing again.”

Platinum owns the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper as well as tech companies U.S. Robotics, Vanguard Networks, Canvas Systems and MegaPath.
