Heroes on The Green

Elliot Dix and Don Schwarz are going heavy on medals. They’re bringing eight recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor to Los Angeles for a golf tournament next week.

It will be one of the largest gatherings of those who have won the medals – the highest military honor. Only 85 of all those who have received the medal are alive today.

“When you have 10 percent of America’s true national heroes in one place, it brings a special spirit to the tournament,” said Schwarz, a manager at RBC Wealth Management in Beverly Hills. The event will be at MountainGate Country Club near the Getty Center.

Schwarz and Dix, who owns D&D Door and Hardware in Los Angeles, are co-chairmen of the MountainGate Veterans Appreciation Tournament, an annual benefit for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps injured veterans. About 350 people will attend the event Aug. 15.

In addition to golf, the day will feature presentations by high military officials, a fly-over by the Condor Squadron of Van Nuys, and a color guard and flag ceremony. The keynote address will be delivered by Jack Jacobs, NBC News military analyst and a Medal of Honor winner.

Schwarz said the key to rounding up the medal recipients was convincing Michael Thornton and Tommy Norris to attend. They are Navy SEALs who won the Medal of Honor for daring rescues in Vietnam. The other medal winners followed.

Dix organizes the event, while Schwarz handles fundraising. Local sponsors include Mattel Inc. and Macerich Co.

Dix has a particular personal goal for the tournament.

“My favorite picture hanging in my office shows me with three Medal of Honor recipients,” he said. “I hope to improve on that with at least seven recipients in a photo.”
