Two Valley Insurance Brokerages Merge

Two longtime independent San Fernando Valley insurance brokerages announced on Monday that they have merged.

Scanlon Guerra Burke Insurance Brokers of Woodland Hills, which specializes in business insurance for large commercial clients, has merged with Northridge Insurance Agency of Chatsworth, which sells personal and small business insurance policies.

Under the merger agreement, Scanlon Chief Executive Jim Scanlon assumed the roles of chief executive and president of the combined company, known temporarily as SGB/NIA. The four partners of Northridge Insurance Agency serve as directors of the combined company.

SGB/NIA, headquartered at Scanlon’s Woodland Hills office, has 70 employees and revenue of $11 million on roughly $120 million in total premium dollars underwritten.

“There are very few independent brokers of this size in Southern California,” said Scanlon, whose father founded the Woodland Hills brokerage in 1964.

Scanlon held the No. 22 spot on the Business Journal’s list of largest commercial insurance brokerages in Los Angeles County published in June, with $6.1 million in revenue. The combined company would have moved up a couple positions on the list.

As part of the merger, two of the companies’ five total offices will be closed and the employees consolidated into the three remaining offices in Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. There will be no layoffs, Scanlon said.

Northridge Insurance was founded in Northridge in 1931 but moved its offices to Chatsworth after the 1994 earthquake.
