Mattel Unit Recalls 10 Million Toys

Mattel Inc. on Thursday said that its Fisher-Price unit is recalling tricycles, high chairs and toys sold in the United States and Canada because of the potential for serious injury to children.

The El Segundo toymaker made the decision in consultation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after some injuries, such as lacerations and choking hazards, were reported. The affected products include Little People Wheelies Stand ‘n Play Rampway; Fisher-Price tricycle models; Healthy Care, Easy Clean and Close to Me high chairs; and various infant toys with inflatable balls.

“Our actions reflect our continuing commitment to the safety of our products. Hundreds of millions of our products are used safely every day and we believe these simple fixes will continue that excellent record,” Kevin Curran, Fisher-Price general manager, said in a statement. Mattel said separately that the recall would reduce 2010 earnings by about 1 cent a share.

This is the second large-scale product recall for Mattel in recent years. The company in 2007 recalled millions of toys made in China that were found to be contaminated with lead.

Mattel shares were down 42 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $23.13 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
