Eric Shanks, a top entertainment executive at DirecTV Inc., is leaving to become president of Fox Sports, the companies said late Wednesday.

Eric Shanks, who now is the El Segundo satellite company’s executive vice president of entertainment, will leave in June. Shanks, 38, will succeed Ed Goren, 65, who becomes vice chairman of the Fox Sports Media Group. Both Shanks and Goren will report to Fox Sports Chief Executive David Hill.

Fox in January restructured its cable networks so that all the sports channels, including 19 regional sports networks, and the Speed and Fuel channels, were put under Hill, who also is Fox Sports’ chairman.

In addition to programming and production, Shanks will be responsible for marketing, promotion, communications, business and legal affairs at Fox Sports. He has previous ties to the company, having worked there in the 1990s as a broadcast associate.

DirecTV in its announcement did not name a replacement for Shanks.
