Something Cooking: Derrick’s Jamaican Cuisine, with specialties such as oxtail and curry goat, has opened its second location, at University Village Shopping Center on the campus at USC. The new eatery, at 3027 S. Hoover St., received assistance from the Valley Economic Development Corp.’s Downtown Los Angeles Retail Project.

Clean Bill of Health: White Memorial Medical Center, a downtown L.A. hospital, has received a certificate of excellence from the California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Taskforce, an initiative funded by the California HealthCare Foundation to provide consumers information on health care providers. Measures used to rate the hospital include ICU mortality, patient experience and patient safety.

Getting to Work: Providian Staffing, a City of Industry job placement firm, has opened an office in Huntington Park. The new outpost is at 1993 E. Florence Ave.

In Fashion: Online vintage-clothing boutique ChicandYouShallFind.com has launched. The site, based in Mid-City, was founded by Brenna Egan, a former fashion editor and Vogue staffer.

Back to School: THQ Inc., an Agoura Hills video game developer, has chosen Southern Methodist University in Dallas as the location of the firm’s new video game lab, where the company will test the playability of its titles. THQ chose SMU because it wanted to tap graduate students in the university’s video game development and design programs.

Checking In: Wilshire State Bank, a Koreatown-based bank, has opened a branch in Arleta at 9700 Woodman Ave.

Dressed Up: OpenGate Capital, a Century City-based private equity firm, has acquired fashion label Nicole Farhi from London parent French Connection Group PLC. OpenGate Chief Executive Andrew Nikou will be named Farhi chairman. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

WEST LOS ANGELES

Moving Up and Out: Counterpoint Systems, which makes rights management and royalty-tracking software, has moved to a larger office in West Los Angeles. The new office, at 11835 W. Olympic Blvd, Suite 450, is 35 percent larger than the firm’s previous home. The move was spurred by the firm’s 25 percent expansion in staff.

Tech Investment: Perfect Market Inc., an Altadena firm that helps online publishers monetize their content, has raised $6 million in series C funding. The round was led by Tribune Co., with Trinity Ventures, Rustic Canyon Partners and Idealab also participating. Perfect Market will use the funds to market and deploy its service.

New Outpost: Encino-based California United Bank has opened a Glendale/San Gabriel Valley Commercial Center in Glendale. The new office, at 801 N. Brand Blvd., will be run by Senior Vice President Ted Vournas.

On the Move: Bugaboo, a maker of baby strollers and accessories, has opened its first retail store. The new shop, at 1160 E. Mariposa Ave., is at the company’s El Segundo headquarters.

Fighting Fit: Ultimate Fighting Championship, a promoter and producer of mixed-martial arts competitions, has opened a UFC gym in Rosemead. The gym chain is the first brand extension for UFC. The new facility is at 3672 Rosemead Blvd. and will offer special fitness programs such as Octagon Training Disciplines and UFK Kids Gym Fitness.
