Northrop Grumman on Monday said it won a large U.S. Air Force contract to provide mission planning software, with the work to be done at its San Pedro facility.

The Los Angeles defense contractor is one of five companies that received an award for the project. The companies will compete for delivery orders which have a potential total value of $919 million over 10 years.

Northrop said the software will allow the Air Force to plan missions and transfer data to its aircraft. The work will be performed by the Northrop Grumman Information Systems unit in San Pedro.

“Our innovative approach to the Joint Mission Planning System has resulted in significantly reduced cost and increased interoperability,” said Mike Twyman, a vice president in the information systems sector.

Shares were down 97 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $54.48 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
