The union representing about 130 janitors at Los Angeles International Airport reached a last-minute labor contract, averting the threat of a strike during the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend, officials announced Thursday.
The janitors, who work for contractors hired by United Airlines and American Airlines along with a consortium of international air carriers in Terminal 2, won a contract late Wednesday that maintains their current hourly wages of $10 to $11 and health benefits, said Jacob Hay, a spokesman for the Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West.
The deal was struck up after ABM, Airserv and Flagship had proposed cuts in sick days and holidays as a way to reduce health care costs. The janitors agreed earlier this week to go on strike if a labor pact could not be reached before the holiday weekend.
