Video Game Show a Hit Investment

Michael Pachter stays serious in his job as managing director and analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities. But he turns into a snarky commentator on “Pach Attack,” his one-man online show about the video game industry.

At Wedbush Morgan, Pachter tracks Santa Monica publisher Activision Blizzard and Agoura Hills publisher THQ, and makes recommendations to investors on the future of the stocks. But on his weekly show for GameTrailers.com, he uses that same expertise to answer questions from avid gamers.

On the taped programs, which are uploaded to the website every Saturday, Pachter doles out advice on all things related to video games, such as what console to buy or how to break into the business.

He peppers his answers with a tongue-in-cheek humor and pokes fun at himself when he doesn’t know the answer to a question. He even ribs his loyal viewers about their critical comments.

“All the commentary says I’m an idiot,” he said. “There are a certain number of people who watch to prove me wrong.”

GameTrailers, a site that posts videos of new games and gaming-related shows, approached Pachter in 2008 about doing a program. They spent more than a year developing it, and the show launched in January. Since then, its 28 episodes have drawn a combined 2 million online hits.

Pachter said he has fun hosting the show, but acknowledged that it also has become a marketing tool for him as an analyst of the video game industry.

“I do it because you can never have your name out there enough,” he said. “It gives me more influence.”
