Health Care Priced To Move

Leslie Michelson is one guy some of L.A.’s wealthiest almost certainly have on their speed dial.

A lawyer by trade, Michelson is the founder of Private Health, an L.A. concierge managed-care company that promises its wealthy clients, wherever they are in the world, access to the best physicians and facilities.

His team recently helped coordinate care for an American hiker who was in a coma in Thailand after taking a fall while on a trip with his wife. Just recently, they expedited the care of an Asian businessman with a complicated gastrointestinal condition who was stranded in London because of the Iceland volcano eruptions.

“It can be very confusing for a busy person to figure out what treatment is the best for them, especially in an emergency,” said Michelson, who is used to palling around with the wealthy as the former chief executive of Michael Milken’s Prostate Cancer Foundation in Santa Monica – and is discrete about his clients’ identities.

Of course, such service doesn’t come cheap. Yearly fees range from $5,000-$7,500 for a standard disease management plan to $30,000-$60,000 for someone with a significant medical condition. Michelson’s service does not replace traditional medical insurance, only augments it.

Much of the day-to-day work involves linking up his clients with the best specialists in the United States. But included in the fee is Private Health’s signature Global Safety Net for clients requiring emergency care while traveling.

More than 1,500 general practice physicians and 130 specialists are part of Michelson’s worldwide network.
