To Make Things Real

The combination of the Internet and layoffs have inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs to create Web-based businesses, everything from graphic design to financial services – with many of them operating on the kitchen table.

But these new business owners confront an old truth: There’s just no substitute for old-fashioned foot traffic and face-to-face encounters.

So that gave birth to an idea by the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce: It is holding a mixer that allows online and home-based businesses – any business without a storefront – to gather for a face-to-face with prospective clients and even potential business partners.

“People are staying close to home. Their needs are unique compared to other businesses,” said Amy Anderson, director of membership and events for the chamber. “It’s really kind of a change.”

The chamber’s First Annual Small Business Expo and Mixer is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Train gym courtyard, 624 N. La Cienega Blvd. Admission is free.
