Valley Merchants Upset About Meter Rates

Business owners, shoppers and restaurant and theater patrons throughout the San Fernando Valley are up in arms about the increased parking meter rates that have been introduced over the past year – and demanding something be done about it.

Councilman Dennis Zine agrees and has asked officials to re-evaluate the rate hike, which was intended to raise an extra $18 million for cash-strapped city coffers. He believes the rate increase may have been counterproductive.

Los Angeles had not increased its parking meter rates in 17 years. Sarai Bhaga, a senior analyst for the City Administrative Officer, said a report based on a three-month citywide study on the effectiveness of the parking meter rates is expected to be completed in mid-September.

The rate hikes were expected to almost double the city’s revenue from its 40,000 parking meters.
