Father Helped Tune Up Executive’s Career in Music

Jonathan Firstenberg developed his love for music through his father, who had a unique way of channeling his passion: collecting music-themed stamps.

“One of the first things he did when we traveled was go to the post office and get new proofs,” Firstenberg remembered.

The elder Firstenberg also shared his love for music by exploring new songs with his son.

“The best part of my relationship with my father was sitting and listening to music with him,” Jonathan Firstenberg said. “It basically opened my ears to learn how to listen to new music.”

Firstenberg picked up the musical baton from his father and turned it into a career, one that recently brought him to MusicBox, a Calabasas firm that provides entertainment and advertising productions with tunes from its catalog, as well as original compositions and scoring. As senior vice president, he will oversee and grow the firm’s publishing and production catalog.

In his new job dealing with working musicians, he will be able to draw on his own experiences. After graduating from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School performing arts conservatory in Connecticut, Firstenberg played classical viola in orchestras. He also sang and played guitar in a band called the North Atlantic Syndicate of Soul.

He also is familiar with composing music for entertainment productions, having won three Emmys for his work as music supervisor and composer for soap operas “Santa Barbara,” “General Hospital” and “Guiding Light.”

“I don’t consider the Emmys that important but everyone else seems to think they are,” Firstenberg said. “They haven’t exactly opened doors for me.”

Nevertheless, he takes a certain satisfaction in his win for “Guiding Light.” He got the award after being let go from the show.

“That felt good to win something that way,” he said.

Firstenberg, 60, lives with his wife, Natalie, and 13-year old son, Bruno, in Los Angeles near Miracle Mile. In his spare time, he likes to cook, travel and walk his Siberian husky.
