The Business Journal salutes seven octogenarians and one nonagenarian for whom age is just a number.

BERT FIELDS, 80

Attorney – Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP

Why not retire?

I love what I’m doing. Why stop?

Do you think you will ever retire?

Not if my health stays as is.

How does your spouse feel about that?

She says, “Keep doing it as long as you enjoy it.” Besides, it gets me out of the house.

What’s the best aspect of working past 80?

I don’t find it any different than working past 70, 60 or 50.

What’s the worst?

There are no seriously bad aspects. More people call me “sir.” I hate it when pretty girls do that.

How do you keep up to date with industry trends and learn those “new tricks” they say old dogs can’t?

What “they say” is baloney. I’m learning new “tricks” every case, every day.

What’s your career goal?

I’ve reached it, and I hope to keep on enjoying it.

What advice would you give to people who want to follow in your footsteps?

Don’t do it if you don’t love it or at least enjoy it. If you’re going to go to an office every day, try to choose something to do there that you find stimulating and fun.

Best advice you ever got?

“Go into law, not surgery.” I would have killed hundreds.

What’s the secret to your vitality?

A profession and wife I love, plus lucky genes.

Do you work more or fewer hours than you did in your 30s or 40s?

About the same. I’m at the office at 6:45 every morning and work more hours each year than anyone else in the firm.
