L.A. County’s unemployment rate jumped in October to another record high of 12.8 percent as the county’s manufacturing, construction and hospitality sector took a hit.

The seasonally adjusted rate was up from 8.5 percent a year earlier, and a revised 12.6 percent in September, according to figures released Friday by the State Economic Development Department. The ranks of the unemployed increased by 8,000 to 626,000 people over the month according to filings by jobless workers.

Despite this, a separate survey of employers showed that the number of jobs reported in the county had a net increase of 36,600 jobs to reach 3.91 million, mostly in the government sector, although professional and business services, education services and health services also recorded gains.

Manufacturing had 3,500 job losses compared with a year ago, with construction down 1,100 positions, and leisure and hospitality losing 500 jobs. Among gainers, local government had the largest increase, 14,400 jobs, as teachers continued to return to work.

California’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate also rose to 12.5 percent in October from 12.3 percent in September. The rate was only 8 percent last October.
