Study: L.A. Indy Car Repair Shops Offer Significant Savings

Los Angeles motorists can save nearly 50 percent on car repairs by patronizing an independent repair shop rather than a dealership, says a first-ever industry-sponsored study of the issue.

After comparing the cost of 10 common vehicle repairs, the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association found that dealerships charged an average of 47 percent more for parts and 46 percent more for labor than their independently owned counterparts.

And nationwide, consumers pay an average of 34 percent more for parts and labor at new-car dealerships than at independent repair shops, the report says. Local service managers weren’t surprised by the findings, agreeing that dealerships typically have higher costs – on everything from parts to overhead – and pass those expenses on to customers.
