Shamrock Urges O.C. Company to Sell Itself

The Burbank investment firm run by Roy Disney and his family is urging the board of Collectors Universe Inc. to put the company up for sale.

Shamrock Capital Advisors Inc. owns nearly 9 percent of the Santa Ana collectibles authenticator in its activist value fund. The company’s share price is down 60 percent from a year ago and currently has a market cap of roughly $31 million.

In a March 6 letter to Collectors Universe Chairman A. Clinton Allen, Shamrock Managing Director Dennis A. Johnson said the company could be worth twice as much if it were put up for sale. It has annual revenue of around $40 million.

Collectors Universe’s history over the past few years is a “litany of lost opportunities, frequent changes in strategy, near delisting from Nasdaq, incurrence of a series of operating losses, and the Board’s pathetic recent adoption of a poison pill we believe only serves to entrench management and this Board,” Johnson said in the letter.

Roy Disney is the nephew of Walt Disney, founder of the Walt Disney Co.
