Leahy Named CEO of MTA

A man who began his career driving buses on the streets of Los Angeles became the most powerful person in local transportation on Thursday.

Art Leahy, 60, who has been director of the Orange County Transportation Authority, was confirmed to the $310,000-year post at chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He starts April 6.

For Leahy, the job is a return to the agency he worked for in its founding. He spent years with the Southern California Rapid Transit District – and was there when it became the MTA – and worked his way up to assistant general manager, only to be fired in 1996 during an overall management shakeout.
