Industrial Designer Takes a ‘Zen’ Approach to Products

Design has been on Andy Logan’s mind since his early years growing up in Ojai.

“From an early age, I was really interested in drawing and taking apart products and seeing how they worked,” Logan said.

When he graduated from California State Long Beach in 1998 with a degree in industrial design, he said his criteria for a job was: “When I woke up in the morning, I was excited to go.”

Logan would go on to work for a diverse group of clients, designing that include a high-end residential oven for TurboChef, a series of Webcams for Logitech and medical devices for Welch Allyn.

The Southern California native had more than 12 years of experience in the industry when he recently accepted the position of creative director at Stuart Karten Design in Marina del Rey.

At SKD, Logan is responsible for motivating and inspiring the creative team as well as providing leadership for the whole organization.

“It’s an interesting challenge for me because I’m taking what I’ve learned in past years and making it a regimen for others to follow and draw inspiration and best practices from,” he said.

Since starting at SKD, Logan’s projects have been with top companies in consumer electronics, medical products and housewares. He said that he enjoys the energetic, creative and busy environment of the firm, where teams tackle challenges from designing hearing aid remotes accessible to users with arthritis to developing product concepts that address emerging issues like electronic convergence.

Logan cites the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” which he is reading for the fourth time, as having a large influence on his design career.

“It’s the best design book out there even though it has nothing to do with design,” he said. “It gets at why we make the decisions we do. It helps me give form to products and influence why people are drawn to certain things.”

Logan lives with his wife and 3-year-old daughter in Thousand Oaks. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, enjoying the outdoors and reading.
