Slow May at Port of Los Angeles

The slowdown at the Port of Los Angeles continued in May as container traffic fell 16 percent compared to last year, according to statistics released Monday.

Imports were off even more, dropping 18 percent to 304,110 cargo container units, or TEUs. The ports smaller export business fell only 7 percent to 152,472 TEUs.

However, May exports were the highest this year due to stronger exports of raw materials, according to a statement posted on the port’s Web site.

The Port of Long Beach reported last week that cargo shipments grew for the third straight month in May, but the total was still down more than 20 percent from a year ago.

Last month, 419,555 cargo container units moved through Long Beach terminals, up 2.7 percent from April but down from the 529,011 TEUs that passed through the harbor in May 2008.
