In 1973, Lou Staller processed one of the first Honda Civics imported to the United States from Japan.
Staller, a car distribution worker who helped oversee the incoming vehicles, did not realize then that the compact, fuel-efficient Civic would help cement the automaker in the American market 14 years after the company first opened a U.S. sales office.
Today, Honda Motor Co. marks 50years in the United States as the fourth-largest automaker in the American market. For most of the past half-century, Honda’s U.S. operations have been headquartered in the South Bay. Torrance-based American Honda Motor Co. has helped lift this area’s economy while contributing to civic life.
