L.A. Port Traffic Continues to Fall

The Port of Los Angeles reported that cargo movement was down by 13 percent in June compared to the same month last year, according to port data released Thursday.

Last month, 551,680 standard cargo container units, or TEUs, moved through Los Angeles terminals, compared with 632,280 TEUs in June 2008.

“Shipping lines have modified ship schedules and deployed smaller-sized vessels to meet current needs for vessel space,” a statement read on the port’s website explaining what affected June’s figures. “Asia’s ports are still reporting, on average, 10 percent or more of a decline in container movement.”

The latest cargo numbers show the Los Angeles port has fared better than its neighbor in Long Beach, which earlier this week reported cargo movement was down 29 percent in June.

However, like Long Beach, the L.A. port also saw cargo drop off from May’s numbers. Around 4 percent fewer containers, or 23,148 TEUs, moved through Los Angeles in June compared to May, a sign that international trade remains slow.
