Energizing Non-Profits With Tires

Carrie Pollare and Dan Hoffman were tired of animal cruelty. The same went for AIDS, breast cancer, heart disease, child abuse and Alzheimer’s, to name a few.

So nine months ago the brother-and-sister team started a Santa Monica-based business aimed at making a profit while contributing to charitable causes.

The result is “I’m Tired of ” called Ito for short a brand of bracelet made of recycled tires and old pewter engraved with messages such as “I’m Tired of Autism” or “I’m Tired of World Hunger.”

Available on the Internet, the bracelets produced by 2 Cool Corp., another company the pair owns sell for $10 each, half of which goes to the relevant charity.

“We’re a for-profit company that’s also trying to do some good,” said Pollare, 55. “We’re trying to make money for ourselves, but more for the non-profits.”

The duo claim to have sold more than 10,000 bracelets, netting $50,000 for charity. Their own take has been minimal, given production and distribution costs. As the idea catches on, however, they hope that will change. They recently began offering the bracelets in bulk at $5 each to non-profits, which then sell them for $10 and keep the change

“We want to sell millions of these,” Pollar said.

The best-selling bracelet so far: I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty. Cheryl Janiszewski, 35, recently bought eight of those bracelets so she could give some to her friends.

“I love them and wear mine all the time,” she said.
