Mayor Creates Trade Advisory Group

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday launched a Trade Advisory Council to boost tourism, foreign investment and exports.

Members of the panel include international business officials, trade experts and city officials.

“Trade is the lifeblood of the local economy, and serves as a catalyst for growth and good-paying jobs,” Villaraigosa said in a statement. “The council will ensure that Los Angeles reaps all of the benefits of international trade and investment, stands front and center in the global economy, and thrives on the world stage.”

Villaraigosa will meet with the council four times a year. Members will report to the mayor on changes on the international trade scene, overseas corporations seeking to establish a presence in the U.S. or considering leaving Los Angeles, and how the city’s image is perceived in foreign markets.

The co-chairman is Dominic Ng, Chairman of East West Bank, and co-chairwoman is Suzanne Nora Johnson, former vice chairwoman of Goldman Sachs Group.

Other members include: Andy Bird, Walt Disney International; Maria Contreras-Sweet, Promerica Bank; John Emerson, Capital Group Companies; Thomas Iino, Pacific Commerce Bank; Lydia Kennard, Airport Property Ventures; Christopher Lee, Forever 21 Inc.; Donald Tang, Citic Securities Global Partners, Inc.; and Carlos J. Valderrama, Musick Peeler & Garrett LLP.

Ex-officio members include: Cathy Bradley Berg, L.A. Inc.; S. David Freeman, Board of Harbor Commissioners; William H. Jackson III, Pircher Nichols & Meeks; Christina Noonan, Jones Lang LaSalle; and Alan I. Rothenberg, 1st Century Bank.
