Sinking Ad Sales Hurt Entravision’s Quarter

Entravision Communications Corp. reported a larger loss in its fourth quarter, largely due to lower ad sales at its Spanish-language TV and radio stations. It also took charges for the diminished value of some broadcast properties.

After Thursday’s market close, the Santa Monica broadcaster reported a net loss $136 million (-$1.58 a share) compared with a loss of $47 million (-48 cents) a year earlier. The company took a $170 million impairment charge following an appraisal of certain television and radio properties. Net revenue fell 16 percent to $52.8 million.

“Our fourth quarter results reflect the continuing impact of the global financial crisis and the recession, resulting in an advertising downturn,” Chief Executive Officer Walter F. Ulloa said in a statement. “We are continuing to focus on debt reduction and are committed to further reducing our costs and operating as efficiently as possible in order to maximize our cash flows, without sacrificing the quality of our content or marketing efforts.”

Entravision radio stations in the greater Los Angeles area include KLYY 97.5 FM (“Jose”), KDLD 103.1 FM (“El Gato”), and KSSC 107.1 FM (“Super Estrella”).

Entravision shares were up 3 cents, or 8.6 percent, to 38 cents in Friday morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
