Alarcon Proposes Film Commission

With Los Angeles still strugging to stem runaway production, City Councilman Richard Alarcon has proposed creating a film commission that would promote the city to the entertainment industry.

Alarcon, who chairs the council’s Jobs and Business Development Committee, asked for a report on creating a commission similar to those promoting filming opportunities in other cities and states. The report would look at various structures as well as the costs involved.

“We don’t really have anyone speaking up for the city and who can explain why this is so important for us,” Alarcon said. “We must fight to ensure we keep productions local.”

The nonprofit FilmL.A., Alarcon noted, processes requests to film in Los Angeles, but does not actually represent the city in trying to lure business to SOuthern California. That kind of promotion was actually conducted by FilmL.A.’s predecessor, the Entertainment Industry Development Committee. However, that agency was dissolved amid allegations of corruption and a conflict of interest.
