When members of the royal family of Liechtenstein visit Los Angeles, they call Merle Elias, owner of Exceptional Means Concierge Services.

For their one-week stay in August, Prince Alexander and Princess Astrid asked Elias for swimming lessons and a pony ride for their child, a personal trainer to come to their hotel, doctor visits and beauty appointments. Oh, and a chauffeur, too.

Signing up Liechtenstein royalty was a coup for Elias’ growing business, putting her in the ranks of notable companies in Los Angeles that provide high-end, on-demand concierge service. She says it’s hard work.

“In some ways, I feel like I run a dating service because you have to find the right match for the right client,” said Elias, 50. “One size doesn’t necessarily fit all.”

A New York native, Elias attended film school before becoming an assistant to a producer. She moved to Los Angeles when she became personal assistant to Dustin Hoffman, which led to other P.A. gigs for Billy Joel, Michael Crichton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Quincy Jones.

Her 2001 book, “L.A. First Class: The Best of the Best,” was included in the Academy Awards gift bags that year. That’s how she got her name out there as an authority.

In 2005, Elias established Exceptional Means in Westwood, with one full-time employee based in New York. She charges $2,000 per month for her handful of subscribers, which include a law firm, a talent agency and a venture capitalist. On-demand clients are billed $125 an hour.

One of her most challenging projects came earlier this year.

Nancy Mehta, wife of former L.A. Philharmonic conductor Zubin Mehta, called Elias for help when one of the ovens broke down at her home in Italy.

Mehta wouldn’t settle for just any repairman she wanted a particular Englishman. Elias had to hire a private investigator to find him. The catch: He had retired. But Elias convinced him to fly to Italy to fix the oven anyway.

“Whenever I run up against a brick wall, I call her,” said Mehta.
