The Los Angeles City Council really seems to care about the health of Angelenos. So much so that it took a decidedly nanny turn this week with two measures.
One bans smoking in farmers markets, those open-air produce-and-tamale fairs that dot the city. The other requires fast-food and chain restaurants to post calorie counts so consumers will know just how fattening their burger or taco really is.
But when it comes to the overall health of the city, well, that’s a different matter. When there’s cash at stake, the city politicians drop their facade of concern faster than you can say “revenue enhancement.”
