Shopping mall operator Macerich Co. said Friday that Chief Executive Arthur Coppola had been named chairman, succeeding founder Mace Siegel, who retired this week.

Siegel, 82, was named chairman emeritus and will continue as a director. He helped found the Los Angeles real estate investment trust in 1993 to continue the operations of The Macerich Group, which had been in business since 1965.

Edward Coppola, senior executive vice president and chief investment officer, was named to succeed Arthur Coppola as president. Both Coppolas also are the REIT’s founders.
