UTi Worldwide Profit Rises in Q2

UTi Worldwide Inc. said Thursday that ts fiscal second-quarter net income and its revenue each increased 21 percent, exceeding analyst estimates.

The Long Beach freight logistics company reported net income of $33.7 million, or 33 cents per share, for the quarter ended July 31, compared with $27.7 million, or 25 cents, in the same period a year ago. Total revenue rose to $1.26 billion from $1.04 billion.

The quarter included a gain of $5.3 million (5 cents) from UTi’s sale of its art packing business. Excluding that, the company’s income from continuing operations was 29 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of 27 cents per share, excluding the one time items, on revenue of $1.24 billion.

UTi shares were up 38 cents, or 2 percent, to $20.11 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
