AFTRA, Hollywood Reach Deal

Hollywood studios and one actors union reached a tentative labor agreement on prime-time television shows quieting concern about a second actors strike this year.

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the studios’ Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have agreed in principle to a three-year pact that hikes pay and provides payments for work used online.

The deal, which is still subject to approval by the actor’s union board, will give AFTRA jurisdiction over programming made for the Internet and other digital platforms.

“This is a challenging time in the entertainment industry and this was a tough negotiation,” said Roberta Reardon, national president of the actor’s union in a statement. “We recognized the hard realities currently affecting the traditional TV business, and we focused on creating a framework that would allow union members to participate fully in the emerging new media marketplace.”

The deal puts pressure on the Screen Actors Guild to shore up a deal with studios after talks broke down at the beginning of this month.

The Writers Guild of America reached an agreement with the studios in February after walking off the job in November over basically the same issues. The Directors Guild of America reached a similar agreement in January, while AFTRA reached a tentative agreement with daytime soap operas and talk shows in March.
