Busy Travel Season to Start This Weekend

The busy travel season kicks off this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, and Los Angeles World Airports said Wednesday that passenger volumes at Los Angeles International Airport will be roughly the same as they were last summer.

The expected decline of 2 percent in domestic travel will be offset by a 5 percent increase in international travel, LAWA said.

Starting on Friday and continuing through Monday, air travelers passing through LAX throughout the summer travel season can expect busy passenger terminals and mostly full flights, said the organization, which runs the L.A. area airports. Airlines are anticipating flights to be 85 percent full for the holiday weekend and throughout the entire summer.

“Los Angeles World Airports is working closely with the airlines and federal agencies to ensure that air passengers are safe and secure while in the airport and in flight,” Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of LAWA said in a statement.

Approximately 2 million passengers are expected at L.A./Ontario International Airport this summer, a decrease of about 5 percent, with approximately 80,000 passengers during the Memorial Day weekend alone.

So far this year, international arrivals at LAX are up 6.5 percent overall, with those from South America up 19 percent; Europe up 13 percent and Asia 3 percent, according to data from LA Inc./The Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau.
