Sea Launch Postpones Mission

Sea Launch Co. has put a rocket launch on hold due to an undisclosed technical issue, the second successive problematic launch for Long Beach company.

The company, which delivers commercial satellites to orbit from an ocean-based platform, was scheduled to send up a broadcast satellite Monday for El Segundo-based DirecTV Group Inc.

“We were in the countdown yesterday and the team saw some data that didn’t look right and the team wanted to take a look at it,” said spokeswoman Paula Korn. “With all launch systems there are issues that pop up and you want to make sure you get it resolved.”

If the issue is resolved in a timely manner, the launch could take place as early as Wednesday.

Sea Launch is a joint venture between Chicago-based Boeing Co. and Russian, Ukrainian and Norwegian companies.

The company drew worldwide attention in January 2007 when its custom-built rocket, carrying a telecommunications satellite and about 500 tons of fuel, exploded seconds after liftoff.

The disaster forced the company to scrap all of its 2007 launches while it recovered. Sea Launch finally resumed missions in January 2008. However, their return to flight was delayed for several weeks due to rough ocean conditions.
