More Scrutiny Over Amgen Drugs

Anemia drugs made by Amgen Inc. and two other pharmaceutical companies will be reviewed by a panel to determine the safety risks in cancer patients using the drugs.

In addition to the best-selling drugs Aranesp and Epogen made by Thousand Oaks-based Amgen, Procrit, made by Johnson & Johnson, and Mircera, made by Roche Holding AG, are going to be examined by the committee.

The Food and Drug Administration’s Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee will meet March 13 to discuss a series of studies on the drugs and then will make a formal recommendation to the panel.

Last May, the panel called for new restrictions on the drugs to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and death.

Shares in Amgen jumped 1.9 percent to $45.60 in afternoon trading Thursday. Shares have lost 34 percent so far this year. Amgen is scheduled to report fourth quarter earnings after today’s market close.
