United Online Triples Profit

United Online Inc. reported growth in fourth quarter profits thanks in large part to a surge in membership at its Classmates.com Web site.

The Woodland Hills-based online services company reported fourth quarter net income of $14.6 million (21 cents per share), more than triple the $4.6 million (7 cents) for the same period a year earlier. Revenue decreased 3.8 percent to $125 million.

The strength of the company’s Classmates.com segment, called Classmates Media, boosted the earnings, posting a quarterly growth of 216,000 paid accounts. United also operates the Net Zero and Juno Internet access services.

For the full fiscal year, United reported a 36 percent increase in net income to$57.8 million (83 cents per share), but saw revenue dip 1.7 percent to $513 million.

United Online canceled its plans to take Classmates.com public late last year, citing poor market conditions. The company acquired Classmates Media Corp. in 2004.

Shares in United Online were up 1.9 percent to $11.41 in afternoon trading Friday on the Nasdaq.
