Eddy Hartenstein Named L.A. Times Publisher

Former DirecTV Group Inc. Chief Executive Officer Eddy Hartenstein was named publisher of the Los Angeles Times, the Tribune Co. newspaper said on its Web site.

Hartenstein, 57, replaces David Hiller, who resigned on July 14, the same day Chicago-based Tribune began a round of cutbacks and seven months after real-estate billionaire Sam Zell took the company private in a buyout. Hiller got the job after his predecessor was ousted for refusing to make newsroom cuts.

The Times has been particularly hard hit by the current turmoil in the newspaper industry. Its daily circulation has tumbled from a peak of 1.2 million in the early 1990s to about 774,000 this year while advertising revenue has slumped. Traffic to the paper’s website, at latimes.com, has increased sharply in recent years but that has not offset the declines in advertising.
