Northrop Grumman Corp. will hold on to a U.S. Navy unmanned spyplane order valued at as much as $3.74 billion after a protest by losing bidder Lockheed Martin Corp. was rejected.

Lockheed was notified its protest was denied on Aug. 8, and the decision is still “protected,” meaning no further information is currently available, Christine Melody, assistant general counsel of the U.S. Government Accountability Office, said in an interview today. A redacted version of the GAO decision may be made public next week, she said.

Northrop’s Global Hawk drone in April beat Lockheed and a third offer from Boeing Co. for the Navy award, which Lockheed protested May 5. The order is for as many as 68 planes with an initial value of $1.16 billion for development through 2014. The Global Hawk was already the U.S. military’s largest drone program due to a $5.7 billion order from the Air Force.
