Supervisor Supports Early Vote on Tax Initiative

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe said Thursday that he now supports a November vote on so-called “Subway to the Sea” tax initiative, and will ask fellow supervisors to reconsider their previous rejection of the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s proposed measure.

Knabe’s change of heart now gives the MTA’s half-cent sales tax measure the three votes it needs to pass the board of supervisors, and be included on the November ballot rather than on a separate ballot.

“Although I am against the sales tax plan, I cannot in good conscience burden county residents with over $10 million in higher election costs,” said Knabe in a press release. “The taxpayers will have to pay for these costs, and that is something I will not allow to happen.”

Knabe said he intends to make a motion at the board’s next meeting to put the measure on the ballot.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board last month voted to seek a half-cent-on-the-dollar sales tax increase that could raise $30 billion to $40 billion for several transit and highway projects, including the first link of a long-awaited Metro Red Line subway extension to Santa Monica.
