Blue Holdings Inc. said Monday that it will discontinue its underperforming Life & Death brand, shutter the company’s only two retail stores and cut its workforce by about 25 percent.

The Commerce-based high-end denim maker said that by cutting about 35 jobs, it will save more than $3.5 million in expenses this year and next.

The stores are in Los Angeles and San Francisco and will be closed in 60 to 90 days, Blue Holdings said. The company will continue making jeans, jackets, belts, purses, and T-shirts through five brands that it sells to retailers.

Shares in Blue Holdings were down 1.3 percent, or 1 cent, to 79 cents in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.
