The Money:

On March 30, Perenchio sold 35.3 million shares of Univision Communications at a price of $36.25, giving him $1.3 billion in cash. His wife’s shares fetched another $54 million. The premium on Univision’s shares accounts for most of Perenchio’s gains in the last year, but his big holdings in Coca-Cola shares also had a run-up.

Buzz:

The man who refuses media interviews and shuns photographers made news in 2006 when he put his Spanish-language media conglomerate up for sale. An investment consortium led by Haim Saban paid a total of $13.7 billion. Not bad for an asset that Perenchio bought in 1992 for $550 million, putting up only $33 million of his own money. After working for Lew Wasserman at MCA and as a Hollywood agent, Perenchio partnered with sit-com producer Norman Lear to buy Embassy Pictures in 1981. After selling it to Coca-Cola, he produced feature films, then bought Univision and took it public in 1996. Perenchio can now devote his full attention to Chartwell Partners LLC, described in SEC filings as “a family-owned boutique investment bank and holding company specializing in the entertainment, media and real estate industries.”
