The Big Picture: 172 Downtown Projects

In recent months development activity has been moving at a rapid clip in Downtown Los Angeles, with plans for everything from a 76-story condo tower near Pershing Square – which could become the tallest residential structure in the West – to a $4 million sushi restaurant, Downtown News reports.

While some developers have encountered troubles and downscaled or even delayed their projects, dozens of other others have been announced. In particular, Downtown’s condominium market appears unfazed by the reported slowdown, with nearly 40 projects in the pipeline, including a handful set to open this year.

The apartment market is also making a strong showing with about 30 buildings being refurbished or built from the ground up. With thousands of new residents moving in, entertainment and cultural amenities are opening. A proliferation of restaurants and bars are set to hit the scene, in addition to new theaters and performance venues.

In all, Los Angeles Downtown News is tracking more than 170 projects, from Chinatown to USC to City West to the Los Angeles River.
