Online advertising and marketing firm Gorilla Nation Media LLC has secured $50 million in funding from Boston-based Great Hills Partners.

The investment firm will gain a substantial minority stake with the investment, Gorilla Nation said in a release. The money is the first capital investment in the Los Angeles-based ad firm since it was founded six years ago.

“We thought it was a pretty unique platform to execute a consolidation strategy and acquire marketing services, online marketing services businesses, and small online media properties,” said Michael Kumin, a partner at Great Hill. “We’ve been spending significant time trying to find a platform in the marketing services space.”

Kumin did not disclose the size of Great Hill’s stake in Gorilla Nation.

“This capital infusion will allow us to aggressively pursue our business model both here and abroad,” Gorilla Nation’s Chief Executive Aaron Broder said in a statement.

L.A.-based Gorilla Nation, which has offices in New York, Chicago and Toronto and employs more than 120 people, said it plans to use the capital to finance the development of online ad technologies and broaden its marketing operations and international presence.
