Gemstar to Develop Internet Video Guide

Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. will begin testing a TV Guide-like listing system for Internet video starting in April, the Hollywood-based company said Thursday.

The media company will launch a test version of an online video search tool that will enable viewers to find clips and full episodes of TV shows and original Internet programming posted on the Web. A formal launch is tentatively planned for later in the fall.

Gemstar said the tool will not attempt to aggregate user-generated videos on sites such as YouTube and Revver, but instead will scour up to 60 Web sites from major television networks and video portals such as AOL Video and Google.

Gemstar said it plans to sell ads on the new search site and also will license the technology to other companies.

Shares in Gemstar were down 5 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $4.10 in afternoon trading Thursday on the Nasdaq.
