AEG Sweetens L.A. Olympic Bid

The owner of the Home Depot Center in Carson has unveiled plans to build a new hotel and training facility next to the venue in conjunction with Los Angeles’ bid for the Olympic Games.

Anschutz Entertainment Group said it will build the facilities if L.A. is awarded the 2016 Summer Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Committee is expected to choose on April 14 whether Los Angeles or Chicago will be the nation’s candidate city.

AEG plans call for a 150-room hotel and conference center and a training facility. Most other details about the plans were not made available, although AEG did display some renderings.

The agreement beefs up Los Angeles’ Olympic proposal less than a month before the U.S. Olympic Committee will chose the U.S. representative to host the games. Tokyo, Rome, Rio de Janeiro and several other international cities are preparing bids of their own. The International Olympic Committee will make a decision in October 2009.

If L.A. is awarded the games, the Home Depot Center would host soccer, tennis, cycling, BMX cycling and archery. AEG, based in Los Angeles, is controlled by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz.
