Toymaker Fisher-Price will have to pay a $975,000 fine for failing to immediately notify the government regarding a nail fastener on a toy that could pose a possible choking hazard.

Fisher-Price, a division of Mattel Inc., sold about 67,000 of the Little People Animal Sounds Farm toys from June to July of 2002, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.

The Safety Commission said Fisher-Price received its first complaint in September 2002, but didn’t report the cases to the commission until March of 2003, violating a requirement that states companies are required to tell the commission within 24 hours of hearing about defects that could create public risk or injury.

Fisher-Price recalled the toys in April of 2003 and offered customers a free repair kit.

Shares in El Segundo-based Mattel were up 32 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $26.33 in afternoon trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
