Edison Gets Transmission Line OK

Southern California Edison said Thursday afternoon that it has been granted state approval to start a planned $1.8 billion transmission expansion designed to tap wind power resources.

The first phase, a $92.5 million, 26-mile Antelope-Pardee Transmission Project, was approved Thursday by the state utility commission. However, the line is still pending approval of the U.S. Forest Service, which should rule on the matter by April.

Edison said it plans a series of transmission lines, costing more than $4 billion, which will deliver some 4,500 megawatts of power from planned wind facilities northeast of Los Angeles. One megawatt is enough to serve about 650 homes.

The utilities commission may rule on two additional segments of the Tehachapi project later this month. The entire plan has 11 segments that need individual approval.

Shares in Edison closed up 58 cents to $47.58 Thursday in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
